Pro Tools Sketch

What it does

A clip-based sketchpad rather than a timeline recorder. Tracks run across a grid of scenes, filled by dragging in loops from a bundled library, importing your own audio and MIDI, or recording from an interface. Clips stretch, reverse, pitch shift by semitone and fade. Every track has delay and reverb sends plus three insert slots, there is a mixer and a set of onboard instruments, and scenes drag into an arrangement that exports as audio or opens in desktop Pro Tools.

In the demo

Jade builds a short piece from the included loops, stretches and reverses clips, records a vocal and drops it an octave, then plays through every onboard instrument from an Arturia KeyStep. She brings in her own sample folders and MIDI files from the Files app, and hits a bug where saving flashes the screen black and sometimes leaves it there.

Worth knowing

It is iPad only, caps at 16 tracks, offers two time signatures and no automation, and hosts no AUv3 plugins. Saving a sketch needs an Avid account. The fit is sketching ideas and exporting them to finish elsewhere.
