GarageBand

What it does

Apple’s free recording app for iPhone and iPad, and the one most people making music on iOS already have. It records audio and MIDI across multiple tracks and carries Touch Instruments, amps, Audio Recorder patches, Alchemy synths, a Beat Sequencer, Live Loops and Drummer, an automated player steered by a complexity and loudness pad. Loops and patches arrive free through the in-app sound library.

In the demo

This entry comes from an update episode, because Jade never made a plain GarageBand demo: her audience already has it. She tours the producer sound packs, filters the loop browser by pack, genre and instrument, sketches a track out of loops, then works the new Audio Recorder patches on vocals and guitar, the Alchemy keyboard patches, and the Beat Sequencer rows for velocity, note repeats and chance.

Worth knowing

The Lady Gaga and Dua Lipa sessions are remix grids, so anything released over them draws a copyright claim. Projects open slowly. Separate episodes cover the Drummer update, with an Alesis Nitro Mesh electronic kit plugged in over USB, and importing MIDI files, which land with automation locked. Three of its sound packs have their own entries here.
