Fair Limiter

What it does

A digital model of the Fairchild 670 tube limiter. It runs mono or stereo with channels linked or unlinked, switches between left right and mid side processing, and offers hard clip or no clip on the output. The sidechain has a high pass, a DC threshold, a boost and a link option that averages the two channels. Oversampling runs at one, two or eight times, and there is a wet and dry mix for parallel work.

In the demo

Jade puts it across drums, bass and piano in a Logic project and solos the bass with the limiting pushed hard to show the thickening without obvious distortion. She then reads through the original Fairchild 670 manual on screen and maps its terminology onto the app’s controls.

Worth knowing

It ships with no presets and no manual, so every setting is dialled by ear. The free download mutes for a second every few minutes until the in-app unlock, and the developer’s earlier free plugins are covered in the Jan Maes Free Collection entry.
