Penombra Celli & Viole

What it does

Two sound packs for AudioModern’s SoundBox, one cello and one viola, from Sonora Cinematic’s Founder’s Locker series, sold separately at $11 each. The recordings are the first and most extreme takes from the Movimento sessions, where players pushed and pulled single sustained notes, layered with processed acoustic and fuzz guitars and analogue synths. Each pack holds twelve presets from delicate soundscapes to rumbling drones, stacking four samples across SoundBox’s columns, several in MPE as well as standard versions.

In the demo

Jade covers both packs in one video, celli first. She imports in AUM and holds notes while soloing the columns, so the guitar crystal and heated tape layers can be heard apart from the strings. She plays the MPE presets from MPEDA, lets the random vector move between samples, then moves to the viole pack at 11:06 and runs its Rumble preset up and down the keyboard.

Worth knowing

Both need SoundBox, a free download whose editing and pack building features stay closed until one of AudioModern’s own packs is bought inside the app. These are atmospheres and drones rather than playable articulations, so anyone writing orchestral parts wants a different pack.
