Logic Pro for iPad

What it does

Apple’s full DAW for iPad, now sold only through the Creator Studio subscription alongside Final Cut Pro and Pixelmator Pro. The 3.3 update adds filter, resonance, volume and pan lanes with randomization to Beat Breaker, tempo analysis and align-bars or align-beats options for Flex Time, expanded Chord ID, granular sync and formant shift in Sample Alchemy, a Granular Alchemy sound pack, foreground grid lines, paste at playhead and a MIDI note repeat command.

In the demo

Jade downloads the sound pack, works through the new Beat Breaker lanes on a drum loop, stretches a 154 BPM loop into a 100 BPM project, then analyzes chords on a full mix from her Dread Circus album and hands them to Session Players. A separate episode on the Drummer has her rebuilding a friend’s drum track, splitting regions so fills land at section ends and switching hats, rides, ghost notes and humanize per section.

Worth knowing

Chord detection is less exact on dense mixes than on a solo piano or guitar, and Sample Alchemy on iPad exposes fewer controls than the Mac version.
