Dark Veil

What it does

A sound pack for AudioModern’s SoundBox, and the first release in Sonora Cinematic’s experimental Founder’s Locker series. It is built from recordings of bowed instruments run through pedals, amps and effect chains, giving 15 presets of muted strings, harmonics, overdriven drones and broken lo-fi textures. Every preset comes in an MPE version and a mod wheel version, so the same movement is available without an MPE controller. It downloads as WAV or FLAC.

In the demo

Jade imports the pack in AUM and plays through the presets from a keyboard, riding the mod wheel where the MPE layer would sit and using an on-screen MPE surface on the patches that take it. She isolates the four sample slots of the vector preset, then drives two instances from a chord generator.

Worth knowing

It needs SoundBox, which is a free download, and the same files load on desktop. These are atmospheres rather than playable instruments, so anyone wanting a bowed string section for writing parts should look elsewhere in the catalogue.
