What it does
The piccolo trumpet in Audio Modeling’s SWAM brass line, the highest pitched of the five, modelled rather than sampled, so tone follows the controller for the length of the note. Expression, dynamics, vibrato, growl, flutter tongue, breath noise and pitch sit on the panel and nearly all take MIDI learn. Mutes cover straight, cup and hand, and a timbre page reaches bell resonance, tuning and expressivity.
In the demo
Jade keeps mute control on the fourth knob of an Arturia KeyStep with a sustain pedal attached, then takes the piccolo up past where the plain trumpet and the trumpet in C stop. She notes the top of its range runs higher than most players will use.
Worth knowing
Sold on its own and inside a Trumpets bundle with the plain trumpet, the trumpet in C and the two flugelhorns. It is the specialist here, picked for the high register rather than general trumpet parts.
