SWAM French Horn F

What it does

The F French horn in Audio Modeling’s SWAM brass line, a separate app from the B flat horn and modelled rather than sampled, so tone follows how the note is played. Expression, velocity, vibrato, growl, flutter tongue, tongue attack and breath noise are on the panel, and almost all of them accept MIDI learn. Pipe gestures move between half valve, normal valve and half trans valve, mutes cover straight, cup and hand, and the timbre page reaches bell resonance and micro tuning.

In the demo

Jade plays from an Arturia KeyStep 37 with an iRig Stomp IO underfoot for expression, mapping flutter tongue, growl and breath noise to knobs. She switches straight from the B flat horn to this one and says the difference sits in the timbre, clearest when the keyboard is transposed up or down.

Worth knowing

The two French horns are close enough that most people will want only one, which is part of why the five apps sell separately as well as in a bundle.
