What it does

A program-dependent RMS compressor that runs standalone, as Inter-App Audio or as an AUv3. Input gain, threshold, ratio and knee sit above a display that draws the incoming signal in white and the compressed result in red, so gain reduction is visible as it happens. The ratio list starts at 0.1, climbs through 3, 7, 10 and 20 to one to infinity, then carries on into negative ratios. Switching on the side chain adds high pass and low pass filters that decide which frequencies trigger it.

In the demo

Jade works it on drums she played into GarageBand from an electronic kit, raising the threshold until the hi-hats are squeezed out, then runs presets that remove the kick or thin the room. She also uses it gently on a bass line, and on a noisy Apple guitar loop where a preset gates the hiss between chords.

Worth knowing

The AUv3 window will not enlarge in GarageBand, so Jade switches to AUM for a readable display. Standalone mode records nothing, so it only monitors a live input.
