KA Mini Xun

What it does

A sampled Xun, the ancient Chinese clay vessel flute, as its own standalone and AUv3 app. The sound is soft, round and hollow, a long way from the reedy SuoNa or the bright bamboo flutes in the same range. It plays one note at a time, and the panel keeps to volume, tone, reverb and pitch bend depth with a keyboard or wind instrument switch.

In the demo

Jade saves this one for last and lingers on it, playing slowly through its range. Earlier in the show she goes through the real instruments the range is modelled on, including the clay Xun and what an original costs to buy.

Worth knowing

Being soft and breathy it sits back in a mix and suits texture more than lead lines. It opens on wind instrument input every launch, so keyboard players switch modes first. Sold on its own, or in the App Store bundle that covers all nine.
