KA Mini DongXiao

What it does

A sampled DongXiao, the end-blown bamboo flute, in its own standalone and AUv3 app. It is the darker and lower voiced of the small flutes here, monophonic, and responds to velocity, so playing softly changes the breath in the tone. The controls run to volume, a tone tilt, reverb and a pitch bend range, and a picture of the real instrument sits behind the panel to show what is being imitated.

In the demo

Jade walks its range to find the lowest note, plays softly to show the velocity response, and uses the tone control to pull back the shrillness at the top, which brings up more breath as it goes.

Worth knowing

It loads with the wind instrument input selected, so a MIDI keyboard makes no sound until you switch to keyboard mode. Nothing here shapes a sustained note beyond the pitch bend. The download is small, about 23.8 MB, and each of the nine instruments is bought on its own or through the App Store bundle.
