Animoog Z

What it does

A polyphonic synth built on Moog’s Anisotropic Synth Engine, where a patch is a path of points travelling through a grid of timbres on the X, Y and Z axes. Timbre lanes are chosen from a library, and points are tapped in, drawn with a finger or Apple Pencil, then dragged into the third dimension. Alongside it sit amp, filter and mod envelopes with curve controls, three LFOs, mod slots, an arpeggiator, a looper, a scale selector and filter, thickening and delay effects. The download is free, with a paid unlock and separate sound packs.

In the demo

Jade opens the original Animoog for comparison, clears a patch to nothing, then rebuilds it point by point, swapping timbres and spinning the orb with two fingers. She plays it from an Arturia Keystep to show aftertouch, patches LFOs onto rate, pressure and the mod wheel, and ends by using Animoog Z as an effect on a piano.

Worth knowing

It is heavy: three instances alongside other plugins push Jade’s AUM session hard. The edit screen also has to be exited before playing, which she forgets repeatedly on camera.
